did you refer to your high school as just “*name* high” like they do in the movies like “east high” or “sky high” or did you always add “school” to the end of it

high school

just high

Yeah I didn’t go to a high school, I went to a school. It was a Quaker school, so it was Argle Bargle Friends School.

neither, it was either four-letter acronym (in which case the HS was part of it) or one word. afaik, it’s similar in the larger cities in WI here: Marquette, Memorial, West, etc. if you need to specify it’s Milwaukee Marquette, Madison West.

Yeah ours was the equivalent of “ABSS”, “recognizable name secondary school”. And we mostly referred to it by the name or the acronym od just “the high school” since we only had one.

Overall in my region it’s a mix, depending a lot on how many syllables, as far as I can tell, but also on Vibes, and whether “highschool” is actually in the the name, but mostly any indication it was a school was only added if there was need to, you know, be clear about that.

So if you’re already in a convo about highschools and you say “oh, I went to West Van” you probably won’t add either or any variation, as long as there’s only one school with “West Van” in its name anyone could expect you to refer to.

Yeah in the town I currently live in, the two high schools are just Lathrop and West Valley, even though “High School” is assumed to be part of the name, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone actually call them that. (Either “High” or “High School” would sound equally weird.) If someone says West Valley you know what they’re talking about.

IIRC in the town I grew up in, you’d sometimes tack on “High” because some of the high schools had the same name as associated neighborhoods or elementary schools, so it was useful to know if someone was talking about Dimond High or any one of the 400 other things called Dimond in that area (the road, the mall, etc). But adding “school” sounds weird and formal to me.

You have to be very specific on which school you’re talking about in my community because there are three, but all are called “blah blah High School”. Or the acronym still includes HS.

neither we always just called them by the name only like i went to liggety and my friends went to North or South some went to skyline etc

HEY

Y'all don’t forget to go watch the Blue Beetle movie!! I just saw it and it handled Jaime Reyes’ story very well and is definitely worth the watch.

For those worried about the writer’s and actor’s strike, please keep in mind neither WGA nor SAG-AFTRA have called for consumer boycotts. In other words, enjoy as many movies as you’d like. You will not be crossing a picket line!

Who should be in the bracket?

Ella from Ella Enchanted

Abbie from The Two Princesses of Bamarre

Her name is ADDIE

And if you liked ella enchanted growing up you should give two princesses of Bamarre a shot. This book was a formative part of my childhood.

It is NOT a romance book. Its about a girl who is afraid of everything going out on a dangerous adventure inspite of her fears in order to save her sister from an uncurable illness since all the adults are being useless politicians. She fights monsters and outsmarts a dragon and she has cool magical gear. And she ends a curse by loving her sister and making other people find their courage too. Its such a lovely story.

i knew she had no shot no one knows that book

I regret to inform everyone that @catchaspark’s reblog was made in 2017 and that Taking the Hobbits to Isengard was actually published 17 years ago, not 12 years ago.

Happy 18 years!

In banning trans women from chess the insane anti-trans lobby has fully revealed their hand. They don't just believe that sex is a non-material immutable binary, they also think that women are intellectually inferior. Which is what we've been saying they believe from the start — Katy Montgomerie 🦗 (@KatyMontgomerie) August 16, 2023ALT

Important to note that ALL trans people are targeted by this ruling. Trans men will be stripped of all chess titles won, which can only be returned to them by “changing the gender back to a woman” (a direct quote from the ICF’s ruling). ALL transgender chess players will be marked as trans in their files.

Not trying to deflect from the blatant and virulent transmisogyny present here. Just giving a bit more info.

Erin Reed did a good breakdown of the ruling here:
